- BIOGRAPHY: SETH CADWALLADER was one of the pioneer merchants of Milton, in which town he settled about 1812. He was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. October 11, 1796 and after coming to Milton engaged in clerking, but subsequently went into business and followed merchandising until 1854, when he retired. On the 3rd of February, 1824, he married Elizabeth, daughter of George Hammond, and a native of Northumberland county. Her father was one of the first settlers of this part of the State, was captured by the Indians during the Revolutionary War and turned over to the Hessians, and was held a prisoner five years. Eleven children were born to Seth and Elizabeth Cadwallader, only three of whom are living; Hammond, of Juniata county; Albert, of Milton, and Kate, wife of James McConkey, of Philadelphia. The parents died August 24, 1863 and June 3, 1880 respectively.

Biography |
- BIOGRAPHY: Seth Cadwallader was born in Horsham, Bucks County, PA on October 11, 1796. He was the son of Abel and Jane Cadwallader. He moved to Milton, PA as a young man (1812). His first cousin once removed, Mary Cadwallader had married Seth Iredell in 1795. They moved to Milton in the early 1800s where Seth Iredell had a mill and was President of the first Milton Bank. The records say that Seth Cadwallader started in the mercantile business in Milton in 1812. Since he would have been only sixteen years old at that time, it seems likely that he went to Milton to work for his cousin Seth Iredell and that Iredell later helped Seth start his own business.
Seth married Elizabeth Hammond of Milton in 1824. They had ten children, but only four of them lived to be adults, and one of those died at 22.
Seth Cadwallader did well in business. He was a prosperous merchant. He retired in 1854 after forty-two years in the merchantile business. His son Albert was also a merchant in Milton, but Albert was only thirteen when his father retired and could not have taken over the business from him.
Seth Cadwallader died in Milton on August 24, 1863. His wife Elizabeth died June 3, 1880. They are buried together with six of their children in the Milton Cemetery.
